Today a New York Civil Liberties Union legal observer was arrested while keeping an eye on things at a picket affiliated with Occupy Wall Street Spring Training. Bad move, NYPD. Just last week, a National Lawyers Guild legal observer filed suit against the department for arresting him while observing an OWS action back in January.
People on the scene at the MTA Spring Training picket tweeted that a journalist was also arrested, but this is hardly out of the ordinary for the NYPD; the department seems to have a thing for interfering with the press.
The MTA police on scene at the picket line in NYC today were reportedly well armed. Perhaps over-armed, given that their job performance involved arresting trained legal observers and members of the press. Not exactly armed combat.
