NOON: Rally at Dewey against the Patriot Act.

1PM: March leaving from Dewey against the Patriot Act.

3PM: Teach-in at Dewey with the ACLU of MA's Education Director Nancy Murray.

The USA PATRIOT Act (“Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism”) will be ten years old on October 26.  It was passed by Congress without going through the usual legislative procedures and with virtually no debate.  It might not have passed so quickly if it had a name that reflects what it really does: something like “The Expand Surveillance, Search, Seizure and Indefinite Detention Act.”

Over the past ten years, how has the PATRIOT Act undermined fundamental freedoms?  What should activists know about the expanded powers it gives to law enforcement?  This session will feature cases of people targeted by the PATRIOT Act, efforts that have been made to roll back PATRIOT Act powers and how we can fight it in its second decade.

Nancy Murray has been Director of Education at the ACLU of Massachusetts since 1987.  She  also taught at the University of Nairobi (Kenya) for 7 years and directed a nationwide program to combat racism in the media at London’s Institute of Race Relations.  After 9/11, she helped get 53 Massachusetts cities and towns to pass resolutions against the PATRIOT Act.  She has written widely on the post 9/11 attack on civil rights and civil liberties and on the emerging national security surveillance state.
