The Boston Globe has published data showing how much police departments throughout the state cost per resident in 2012. The data shows that Cape and Islands communities that have small year round populations but receive large numbers of seasonal tourists have by far the highest per capita law enforcement spending in the state. Urban areas spend more than average, too, while rural areas spend the least on their police departments.
Here are the top five:
- Truro — $649
- Provincetown — $598
- Edgartown — $586
- Wellfleet — $525
- Boston — $437
The town of Hancock, Massachusetts spends a whopping two dollars per capita on its police department.
