No, Massachusetts state law does not require people to carry identification

Yikes.

MIT made a whopping misstatement of law when its Commencement page erroneously said: "Visitors to Massachusetts should be advised that state law requires adults in public places to carry government-issued photo ID."

The university fixed the error when a concerned alum objected. Thankfully, we don’t (yet) live in a Stasi-state where government officials can demand "your papers please." No thanks to MIT.
