As Jonathan Mayer lays out in this must-read blog post, Department of Justice prosecutors haven't exactly been forthright with courts about how the NSA and FBI can collect our medical and financial records.
The "intelligence community" can collect our medical records and banking and credit card transactions without warrants and in a dragnet fashion. Local prosecutors can subpoena many of those same records. But thanks to enormous "National Security" holes in privacy legislation governing medical and financial data, the super spooky deep state agencies can hoover up this information in bulk, to add to the swirling mix of data composed of our phone and internet records. Thanks to the government's suspect Patriot Act interpretation, the Feds can also obtain information about you from your therapist.
