Professor Sahar Aziz on the FBI’s “preventative paradigm”

On the one hand, the FBI is investing lots of money and resources into data mining, supposedly so that government agencies can predict crime before it occurs. On the other hand, the bureau isn't waiting for computers to "connect the dots" — it is going out into the field and paying informants to goad others into agreeing to participate in violent schemes. 

Data mining is much more likely to produce social control than security. There's no evidence to suggest that the FBI's aggressive campaign of instigating terrorist plots makes the US any more secure. 

But these programs sure do cost a lot of money, at a huge cost to our liberty
